BATL Information

BATL Rules

  • I. Divisions of Play
    • A. A and B Level Divisions.
    • B. Divisions will be aligned with the NTRP to make each division as competitive as it can be.
  • II. Seasons
    • A. There will be a Fall and Spring season, each separate from the other.
    • B. Awards will be given to the winning team in each season.
  • III. Type of play
    • A. A and B Level divisions - 5 doubles matches.
    • B. Teams not residing in Hillsborough county will be considered traveling teams with the possibility of no home matches.
  • IV. Day and Time
    • A. All matches are played on Wednesday.
    • B. Match time and forfeit time is 9:10 A.M.
    • C. Special match times may be set up at captains' mutual consent.
    • D. If 5 courts are not available, the second round matches must arrive by 10:00 A.M.; forfeit time is 10:10 A.M.
    • E. Visiting captains should call home captain by Monday to confirm the Wednesday match.
  • V. Eligibility
    • A. All regular team members must have an NTRP ratings.
    • B. High school students are ineligible.
    • C. College students are eligible as long as they are not members of their college team.
    • D. All other players may play as long as they fall into the rating levels of the appropriate divisions.
  • VI. Rosters
    • A. All teams to submit a team roster to include all players and subs.
    • B. Please complete all information on roster.
    • C. For clubs with more than one team, there will be no moving from one roster to the other during the same season.
  • VII. Team order of strength
    • A. All clubs must use some type of challenge ladder or round robin to set positions according to strength. Simply placing the teams where you want is not allowed.
    • B. If a team at a higher position loses two matches in a row (including a loss by default or with subs) and the team in the next lower position wins two matches in a row (including a win by default or with subs) the teams will switch positions.
  • VIII. Substitutes
    • A. Subs are only allowed in the division appropriate to their NTRP level.
    • B. If there is a protest to a sub's ability that sub has 14 days to be rated by a certified NTRP verifier.
    • C. Teams receiving a win by default may not sub (you cannot win twice in one day), however defaulting team members may sub, but only at a higher position.
    • D. You may not sub for more than one club.
    • E. Captains must keep the sub list up-to-date and all subs must be listed on the roster before play.
  • IX. Forfeits
    • A. You may forfeit any position when subs are not available. Teams do not have to play if the position ahead of them forfeits.
    • B. If you must forfeit, please call the opposing team the night before.
    • C. In case of rain, a default does not stand as long as play has not started.
  • X. Scoring
    • A. All including matches count for team points.
    • B. Divisional winners will be determined by the total number of individual matches won.
  • XI. Reporting of Scores
    • A. Home team captain to send in post card to BATL; please mail on Wednesday so we can compile scores. Or use e-mail.
    • B. Captains are to exchange line-up sheets prior to match.
    • C. Captains should keep line-up sheets for future reference.
    • D. Protests must be submitted in writing and mailed no later than 48 hours after the match.
  • XII. Rain Matches
    • A. The home team is to call the visiting team giving them 3 choices of make-up play time. The visiting team must respond with their choice within 48 hours. If they do not respond or are unable to play on any of these dates, the visiting team must forfeit.
    • B. All rain matches must be started at the exact place where interrupted with the same players. If an individual match has not been started, a sub may be inserted for the rain make-up.
    • C. Matches played in full will stand as played including forfeits, defaults, and retired matches.
    • D. If the court is unplayable for thirty minutes, that match is postponed. The home team captain is to determine when the play can be resumed.
    • E. Home team captain is to initiate and schedule all rain matches.
    • F. Every effort should be made by the players and/or maintenance staff to make sure the courts are ready for play prior to a match.
  • XIII. Court Availability
    • A. Captains are responsible for the scheduling of the home courts.
    • B. The minimum number of courts to compete in the Platinum, Gold, and Silver divisions is three and in the bronze division is two courts.
    • C. Home team pays all court fees.
    • D. If the home team has less than five courts, they may play any of the five teams first. Home team has their choice.
    • E. Teams with more than one home match must split courts. (See rule XII-B)
    • F. Special court assignments or times should be taken care of prior to the day of the match.
  • XIV. Balls
    • A. Home team is to supply new USTA approved balls.
  • XV. Drinks
    • A. Each home team will supply drinks, cups and ice for each match.

    • A. All matches to be governed by USTA rules and the "code" as related to team events.
